Well there are other places you can go especially in economics that insulate you from the worst tendencies of the discipline. I personally really like antitrust consulting. You're still in the "sphere" but you don't see the same poor work culture I touch on above. Generally my advice would be just to keep going as long as you can hold out and when it feels like going on is pointless, to leave it.
